What IT support does a Spokane medical office need?

A Spokane medical office needs everything any office does, plus the safeguards HIPAA expects: a signed business associate agreement with its IT company, a regular risk analysis, controlled access to patient records, encryption and tested backups. Local IT companies vary a lot in healthcare experience, so check what each one has actually done for clinics.

That's the short answer. The rest of this page covers what HIPAA asks of your IT, what local firms list for healthcare, and what to ask before you sign.

Healthcare IT in one line

You’re not just buying IT support. You’re choosing a business associate with access to patient records.

  • Your IT company should sign a business associate agreement before it touches any system with patient data.
  • Downtime costs more in a clinic, so response times and after-hours cover matter.
  • Experience with your practice software is worth as much as general IT skill.

What HIPAA asks of your IT

The HIPAA Security Rule requires administrative, physical and technical safeguards for electronic patient records. In practice, your IT company should help you with:

  • A business associate agreement (BAA) covering the firm and any partners it uses
  • A risk analysis of where patient data lives and what could expose it, repeated as things change
  • Access controls: a unique login for every user, multi-factor sign-in and automatic logoff
  • Audit logs showing who opened which records
  • Encryption on laptops, phones and email that carry patient data
  • Tested backups and a plan for keeping the practice running during an outage
  • Staff training on phishing and handling patient data

HHS proposed a stricter update to the Security Rule in January 2025. Ask any firm you speak to how it is preparing for it.

Systems to ask about

General IT skill isn’t enough on its own. Ask each firm whether it already supports:

  • Your electronic health record and practice management software
  • Imaging systems, such as PACS, if you take X-rays or scans
  • E-prescribing, patient portals and online scheduling
  • Phones, fax and patient text reminders
  • Medical devices that connect to your network

Compliance work is usually priced on top of the monthly plan. For typical numbers, see what IT support costs in Spokane.

How to decide

  1. Ask for the BAA first. A firm that hesitates to sign one isn’t a fit.
  2. Ask about your software. Get the names of clinics they support on the same system.
  3. Ask who runs the risk analysis and how often they repeat it.
  4. Match their hours to yours. If you see patients evenings or weekends, check who answers then.

If your practice already has an IT person on staff, see when co-managed IT makes sense.

Bottom line

Pick an IT company that will sign a BAA, knows your practice software and can show HIPAA work at other clinics. Ask every firm on your shortlist the same questions, and get the answers in writing.
